Chapter

Eleven

It wasn’t quiet as we all went to our rooms, accompanied by Sheriff Variks and Detective Smith. Phil was grumbling lowly, while Bobby kept telling Smith he was making a mistake. Dan repeatedly shook his head, letting out low whispers, saying how ridiculous everything was.

We stayed on the first floor and ventured to Bobby’s room first. It was all the way at the end of the hallway, giving all three men plenty of time to complain about what was happening.

“Okay, Bobby,” Variks said. “Let me pat you down.”

“Seriously, Sheriff?” Bobby replied, quirking an eyebrow. “You know I wouldn’t do anything like this.”

“We have to make sure, Bobby. Sorry,” Sheriff replied.

Bobby rolled his eyes as the sheriff began searching him. After patting down his pants and arms, he searched all his pockets and then escorted Bobby into his room while he grabbed his stuff.

Detective Smith watched us closely, seemingly waiting for one of us to act out. Phil continued to stew, leaning against the hallway wall. Dan stood across from him with his hands in his pockets.

I wanted to try to bring up a topic in hopes of one of them possibly saying something I hadn’t already heard. What I didn’t want to do was make it blatantly obvious that I was trying to get them to talk.

After a few minutes, Bobby emerged from his hotel room with Variks, pulling along a gray suitcase on wheels. Phil’s room was right next to Bobby’s, and Detective Smith did the same thing with him that Variks had done with Bobby. All the while, Phil looked thoroughly annoyed.

Smith and Phil both exited his room, Phil rolling along a suitcase similar to Bobby’s and carrying a messenger bag over his shoulder. We all started down the hallway to go up to the second floor, where Dan’s room was located.

Phil let out a large groan. “This is illegal.”

Sheriff Variks pressed the up button for an elevator as we all stopped in front of it.

“I already told you I have authorization,” Smith replied.

“Yeah, from paranormal agencies.”

“Just let it go,” Dan said. “Unless you’ve got something to hide.”

The elevator dinged, and the doors opened. Variks stood in the threshold of the lift, waiting for us to go in, but no one did. Instead, Phil looked over at Dan, putting a finger in his face.

“You and Bobby were the last ones with Miguel. And I know Bobby didn’t do it.”

“And just how do you know that?” Dan challenged him, raising his voice. “Bobby was the last one with him. I left after I got my drink.”

“Hey!” Bobby shouted at Dan. “I didn’t kill Miguel.”

“What’s your problem?” Phil shouted, pushing Dan. “Where’d you go after you got your drink, huh?”

“That’s funny. You questioning me,” Dan replied. “By my count, no one saw you anywhere. Just where were you? How do we know you were in your room? If you’re so certain Bobby didn’t do it, how do we know you didn’t come out and kill him afterward?”

Dan stepped closer to Phil, both of them almost nose to nose.
